In my experience, best weapons are laser weapons. Ammo is cheaper and you can shoot burst. Just pick the best you can find and mod it. Regardind your second question, I do think one with the weapon works with all ranged weapons. 2.Fire's probably your best bet. Poison seems to be working for robots too. #3. I think only melee weapons have sockets. At least, I have upgraded grenade launcher, flamethrower, plasma rifle & double barrel shotgun to level 3 and none have sockets. As far as I know, the best way to add damage is to raise the appropriate combat skills to level 3; i.e., taking "ranged weapons" to level 3 gives +30% damage. #3.
