If you had upgraded to a 9900K (which that motherboard probably can't run at full power) you would have the same problem. Single channel 2666 is not enough for a 6 core CPU, let alone an 8 core - it's memory starved.

the 9900k is better and will last longer than 9700k. that person just means that if you have limited money to spend, a faster video card will make games faster. obviously though a whole cpu upgrade costs a lot of money and some people will run out before they can afford to get a new video card, even if they did save some money buying the cheaper cpu.
