#1 · Jun 19, 2015. The rubber lines that run between the tank sending unit and the metal underbody lines sprung a leak and need replacement. This is the fuel supply line, the return line, and the tank vent. I have everything disconnected and the tank is already removed. However, I can't seem to extract the 3 lines.It is a proprietary piece of fuel line you cant buy off the shelf i used to buy them from the dealer for about $90. When running at idle the pressure jumps to 80 psi, oscillating between 75 and 85. Remove your fuel return line at the filter. Remove your vent hose at the charcoal canister. Now you have two options: 1. Blow into each of the lines removed above and pay attention to the pressure. For the '88 4.2 you should see the fuel filter inline just ahead of the carb. It should have an input line on one side and two outputs on the other. One goes to the carb and the second is a return line. When you put in the new filter, make sure that the filter is positioned so that the return line ...stimpy. You can either drop the tank or make a clever access hole. Just don't blow yourself up. When you fix the lines be sure and use fuel injection line not regular rubber hose. And use fuel injection hose clamps, the regular clamps like to dig into the hose and weaken it. Take good measurements because the hose runs about $6 a foot.

To mitigate the fuel siphon effect, some of us have installed an aftermarket one way valve between the fuel filter and the metal return line. The metal ones are supposed to be more durable than the plastic ones. Pic 1 is a pair of plastic valves. Pic 2 shows an improper fuel filter install. The overflow outlet goes at 12:00 O'Clock.

If it were mine, i would run new line from the front to the rear for both the supply and the return lines. As well as the brake line, cause once you start messing with them, they will just start leaking somewhere else.
