Is ATT "fiber" legitimate fiber optic internet? I just realized I am paying $55/ month for basic internet 6 from ATT and I am considering upgrading to ATT internet 300 for $10 more. Is it legit? AT&T was here today in Milwaukee, WI to upgrade me to 2Gbps. Super easy process, the tech removed the powered ONT and replaced it with a AT&T-branded fiber wall plate. This is your “modem”, it coverts the fiber signal into Ethernet for a router. You unfortunately can’t buy a third party ONT and use it on their system, most fiber ISPs have this restriction.

TL:DR ATT is a shady and corrupt company that will blacklist their own extenders unless you purchase them from them and pay the $7 a month fee.
