Forum Rules. I have a 1985 Mercury 150 Black Max that is overheating as soon as you put the power to it. It will idle at 145 degrees all day but as soon as you raise the RPM's it gets hot and the alarm goes off. It does not cool down after it gets hot. Your symptoms are those of a failing high speed winding, not making enough voltage/current to fire the ignition at higher speeds.

You have lots to choose from. Any 2.0, 2.4, or 2.5 V6 LU with the right length driveshaft will bolt up. A leaking float needle won't be noticed at high speed. They basically stand open at WOT anyway.
